Resources

Medicare is a federal health insurance program, primarily designed for:

  • People aged 65 years and older
  • Certain younger individuals with disabilities
  • People with End Stage Renal Disease – permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant

Four parts of Medicare:

  • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice and some home health care.
  • Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventative services.
  • Part C (Medicare Advantage): Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Includes Part A, B and D.
  • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Helps cover the costs of prescription drugs.  Offered through private plans approved by Medicare.

Costs:

  • Part A: Usually free if you or your spouse paid Medicare taxes while working
  • Part B: Has monthly premiums
  • Part C and D: Costs vary by plan (premiums, deductibles, co-pays)
